Overview:
Ullswater Yacht Club’s clubhouse had been flooded several times and was generally showing signs of it’s age. A competition was held for proposals for a replacement clubhouse and Ainsworth Spark Associates entered a clean, modern design proposal.
The scheme raised the clubhouse above the high water flood mark “docking” into the site higher up the slope and projecting out towards the water with clear views over the lake and boat workspace below at shore level.
The clubhouse included changing and kitchen facilities, the club room and a specialist control room for race officials overlooking the start/ finish line. The form saw a monocoque white shell, reflecting boat-building techniques, projecting out of a timber clad outer sleeve and culminating in a glass box at the lake front, all sat on a Lakeland stone solid plinth.
