Bowes Railway Museum

Overview:

Bowes Wagonshop Refurbishment:

The buildings form part of the Bowes Railway Museum located North of Springwell Village, Gateshead. Formerly the site of Springwell Colliery, the site is designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument as a key part of the rope hauled incline which transported coal between the local collieries of North West Durham and the Staiths at Jarrow.

Grant funding for the first phase repairs was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with a contribution from Sunderland City Council to the Trustees of Bowes Railway Company. Initial works have included replacement of the asbestos roof coverings and wall plates, repairs to the timber roof structure, renewal of external timber lintels above windows and insertion of new steel lintels to doors, refurbishment of windows, repair and re-pointing of some stonework to walls and fitting of gutters.
