Overview:
Ainsworth Spark Associates are overseeing a series of transformative changes to, the Grade II listed, St. John’s Church in Killingworth. After securing planning permission and DAC approval, phase 1 works are currently on site and underway. The upgrades aim to enhance both the functionality and accessibility of the historic building. A new entrance will improve access and create an inviting and more welcome face to the wider Killingworth community located to the north side of the church. Improved heating will make the space more comfortable all year-round and contribute to a reduction in energy use. The toilets are to be relocated to the main space instead of being in an adjoinnig building, providing a more comfortable and convenient experience for guests, including the addition of accessible facilities for people with mobility needs. A new kitchen will offer modern amenities for community and church events. One of the most innovative changes is the introduction of the mezzanine level, which will allow the church organ to be relocated, creating a more flexible space within the church. The entire building will also benefit from thoughtful redecoration, breathing new life into the interior while respecting its heritage.
