Shields Ferry Landings, North & South Shields

Overview:

The ferry landings of North and South Shields are key components in the integrated public transport system of Tyne and Wear. The old landings were replaced with the new facilities as a part of a major redevelopment of the river frontages on both sides of the Tyne.

The two landings were designed to reflect the ship-building heritage of the River Tyne with industrial materials and shapes used throughout and a bascule bridge at the southern landing connecting the pontoon to the shore. This bridge, signalling the entry to the pontoon was the subject of a light-based art work which animates the river at night.
